Pakistan Day: March 23, 1940 Resolution and a Pakistani Christian leader. By Nazir Bhatti
It inspired me to write on Resolution of March 23, 1940, when I saw photo of Pakistani Christian leader J Salik on social media with Pakistani Flag in hand standing on snow in one city of Eastern Coast of USA. I not viewed photo of J Salik in any national newspaper of Pakistan nor in any section of electronic media as part of celebrations of Pakistan Day which again surprised me to scale acceptance of role of minorities in Pakistan Movement and formation of Pakistan.
The Resolution of 1940, was written by one Ahmadiyya Muslim community individual Mohammad Zafarullah Khan as one of leaders of All India Muslim League which was presented by AK Fazal Ul Huq in general body meeting of AIML in Lahore on March 22-24. It was celebrated as Republic Day till 1956 after formation of Pakistan in 1947, but later named as Pakistan Day by Armed Forces of Pakistan.
It will be surprising to note that Ahmadiyya Muslim leader of All India Muslim League who wrote Resolution of 1940, which is called Pakistan Resolution now, his community is fleeing from Pakistan after atrocities and one who Presented this landmark resolution his Bengali nation is not part of Pakistan anymore but earned independence forming Bangladesh.
Pakistan Establishment which controls democracy of Pakistan when it not ruling under martial law have scratched true spirit Resolution of 1940, damaging ideology of Pakistan.
Resolution of 1940, or Lahore Resolution very clearly stated “That adequate, effective and mandatory safeguards shall be specifically provided in the constitution for minorities in the units and in the regions for the protection of their religious, cultural, economic, political, administrative and other rights of the minorities” but where are due rights of religious minorities? Where is Pakistan of Quaid-e-Azam Mohammad Ali Jinnah.
When Muslim of Pakistan on pressure of Pakistan Establishment declares Pakistan as country formed by Muslims for Muslim denying role of Christians and other religious minorities in Pakistan Movement then who cares to post photo of J Salik in national newspapers of Pakistan owned by Muslims.
J Salik is a Christian leader who campaigned for rights of Muslim minorities in India and Palestine as unique struggle to establish interfaith harmony but how government of Pakistan values it when he stands alone on snow holding Pakistani Flag in hand thousands of miles away from Pakistan to mark celebration of Pakistan Day.
I have witnessed struggle of J Salik for religious minorities of Pakistan in particular and religious minorities around world in general which are very valuable and will remain part of history of Christians in Pakistan.
According to social media posting about Julius Salik, its admitted that he gave his 50 years his life to Pakistan and 3-time elected member of National Assembly of Pakistan serving as Federal Minster for population welfare.
J Salik holds very clear stand on “Christian Vote for Christian representatives in parliament” and fighting against selection system from last 20 years.
