Catholic Bishops Conference declares The Year of the Eucharist in Pakistan from this month

Lahore: November 11, 2017. (PCP) The Pakistan Catholic Bishops’ Conference (PCBC), held Second Plenary Annual Meeting in the Renewal Centre in Lahore from 9 to 10 November, 2017. During this Meeting it also reflected prayerfully, on the issues that concern the life the people of our beloved country and of the Church, and to present the following message to community and the people of good will: At present, Pakistan is facing multiple challenges and problems. The corruption in the Country is a cause of big concern to the Church. We have to be honest in our dealings and be free from all stains of corruption. This is a big challenge to us and to the whole of society. In sincerity and honesty before Almighty God and the well-being of our Country we have to confess our failures and ask God for pardon. This requires great courage. If we can begin cleansing ourselves the future of the country will be bright. In their daily problems of life, the people of Pakistan are looking forward to participate in the next elections. The up-coming elections which will strengthen the democratic process should be as transparent as ever. We cannot hope for a stable government if the elections are not free and fair. The more unjust the elections the bigger will be our problems in the future. We have to begin the process by having free and fair elections. The Election Commission of Pakistan must be totally independent and impartial. There must be an honest interim government that will bring in fair practices and not interfere with the election campaigns and the voting process. We appeal to all to elect a sincere government that will rule with integrity. We urge all citizens to give this process the utmost importance. We also take this opportunity to call upon all political parties to address and include issues that concern the problems and difficulties of the minorities in Pakistan in order to build a solid and inclusive democracy. “We feel that the current electoral system for minority candidates being appointed by political parties on reserved seats does not represent the community and so we urge the Government to create a just and fair system” Education is the basic right of every human being. It has power to drag a human from darkness of illiteracy into the light of knowingness. A country can never progress without appropriate educational system. We as Pakistani Catholic Church are striving to impart affordable quality education. This was our effort in the past and this will continue to be our effort in the future. However, it is very unfortunate to say that the educational system in Pakistan is suffering. There are plenty of weaknesses in the educational system at present which require special attention for improvement. We appeal to the Government to introduce an educational system which can create an atmosphere of acceptance, religious harmony and peaceful co-existence in Pakistan. Concerning the life of the Church, that the Government gave Sr. Dr Ruth Pfau the respect she deserved for her tireless efforts to erase leprosy from the country. We express our sincere gratitude to the Government and all those responsible for making the funeral of Dr Ruth Pfau a national event but this must further inspire the clergy, religious, lay faithful and all people to a renewed commitment of serving our neighbour especially in the poor and the marginalized. The Pakistan Catholic Bishops’ Conference has declared “The Year of the Eucharist” in Pakistan that will begin on 26th November 2017 and conclude on the 25th November 2018 on the Feast of Christ the King. The "Year of the Eucharist" is meant to be a time of spiritual growth and inner renewal and to share the love of Christ with all humanity by our dedicated service to our country. As our country is going through difficult times we urge all people in Pakistan to pray more fervently for peace, harmony, progress and prosperity of our beloved country.
