Kashmir and right of self-determination: where Pakistan stand? By Dr. Nazir Bhatti

Pakistan observed February 5, 2019, as Kashmir Day, when rallies were organized, seminars conducted and all parties conference held. The UK remained major country where Shah Mahmood Qureshi, FM of Pakistan, PPP Senator Sherry Rehman, PML (N) leader Syed Mushahid Hussain, President of Azad Kashmir and other leaders gathered in conference room of House of Lords in London and tried to present case of Kashmir. Pakistan questions India on its territory Kashmir and voices for its freedom.

Its ironic to note that Pakistan calls Kashmir govern by India as occupied Kashmir while India calls Pakistan govern Kashmir as Occupied Kashmir; contrary to it India and Pakistan both call for freedom of Kashmir. The Kashmir occupied by India have majority population of Muslims while Pakistan claims its right on religion basis.

The religion theory which divided India failed in 1970 when Muslims of East Pakistan fought for independence from West Pakistan and became Bangladesh but Pakistan still insists as Kashmir is Muslim majority area, so, it shall be part of Pakistan.

Pakistan Army which plays pivotal role in foreign policy of Pakistan have conspired to keep Kashmir Issue alive or active by sending freedom fighters or funding some organizations to fight in Kashmir. As Pakistan Army cannot keep its existence in prevailing capacity without any issue if peace in true terms happens among Pakistan and India.

Pakistan never talks about rights of self-determination under UN Resolutions of 1948, as it is only solution to issue of Kashmir. What is that UN Resolution of 1948? It says that Pakistan occupied Kashmir and Indian occupied Kashmir will be given under control of UN forces for 5 years and then right of self determination vote shall be conducted but both Pakistan and India are reluctant to give these territories under supervision of UN.

In such circumstances, there is no chance of any possible solution to issues of Kashmir as none of party as Pakistan or India are truly ready to act on UN Resolution of 1948.
