Wah Cant, Pakistan: August 29, 2010. (PCP) 62 (Sixty-two) Christian Sanitary Workers were allegedly fired from their jobs without serving any prior notification of termination or informing any reason, said a high level Christian Officer on the condition of anonymity talking to PCP exclusively at Wah Cantonment board on Tuesday , Aug 03rd. The news was also corroborated by Christian member of local government Mumtaz Daniel. Mumtaz Daniel said talking to PCP federal government announced 5% job quota for all minorities including Christians particularly and following the foot-steps of the central government Provincial Government of Punjab had also announced 5% job quota in all provincial governmental departments. Last year Chief Minister of Punjab Mian Shahbaz Sharif visited Wah Cant and announced 5% job quota for Christians as well as to permanent all the Christian sanitary workers whose service was more than two (02) years at that time, said Mumtaz Daniel a local dignitary. Daniel also added all these 62 marginalized Christian Sanitary Workers who were living in deplorably pathetic conditions, he added, their service was more than 7 years each and thus these destitute Christian sewer men deserve to promoted to permanent government employee, he regretted, but Wah Cant’s officials terminated their jobs serving any prior notice or informing them any reason for their termination. Fiery 62 Christian sewer men, their family members and other Christians who have sentimental attachment with those sacked Christians took out to the streets and shouted anti-government and anti-cantonment board slogans. Though sanitary workers were infuriated but they remained peaceful and staged a peaceful sit-in on the Mall road Wah Cant and blocked all kind of traffic for more than two (02) hrs, said Daniel, a renowned politician. It is pertinent to mention here that Wah is a sensitive Pakistani Military Area and the road was not only used by private divers but by military vehicles as well. To see the situation worsening Cantonment Executive Officer Muhammad Younas arrived at the sit-in scene and tried to control the situation but his efforts went futile as he was one of the board members who had decided to dismiss these 62 Christian Sanitary Workers who were the sole winners of bread and butter for their families. Later Deputy Security Officer Colonel (Col) Tanseer and Wah Cant commandant Col; Hammad arrived and heard the concerns and reservations of Christians keenly, later they pledged to resolve the matter within 7 (Seven) days and appealed to the protesters to disperse. After believing the words of both high level Muslim Officers namely, Col: Tanseer and Col: Hammad all Christians dispersed peacefully and went back to their homes, to start counting the tick, tick of the clock. And see if the Muslim officers stand by their words or not, said William a Christian protester
