Iftari with scavengers

Lahore: September 11, 2010. This Ramadan National Council for Interfaith Dialogue led by Fr. Francis Nadeem arranged an Iftar party with the scavengers, the most neglected people of the society. Scavengers or vagrants are the people who live in make-shift tent settlements and have no permanent abode or address. Their mode of earning is either beggary or other menial jobs. To spread message of love and care at grass root level NCID approached a scavenger settlement with Iftari (fast breaking) arrangements. The people were surprised and happy to see the NCID team among them and said that it is for the first time that someone has thought of them in this unique manner and gave them attention. The delegation included Fr. Francis Nadeem, Pastor Amjad Niamat, Romail Asi, Pervez Akhtar, Joseph Francis and Jamshad Saleem. Here are some comments expressed by the scavengers community for NCID. Niamat Ali said that it is for the first time in my life that someone has joined them for Iftari and it is even more joyous for us that a non-Muslim community has come up with this idea. Mohammad Bashir said that no Muslim have ever thought of sharing Ramadan with them. I don’t know what religion do you belong but I am happy that you people arranged Iftari for us without any discrimination. Khadim Hussain expressed his surprise over the kind gesture of NCID and prayed for the prosperity and of progress of the council. Merajul Hassan, a rikhshow dirver said that I an really touched to see the civil society people sharing Iftari with the neglected strata of the society and in most humble manner i.e sitting with them on road side. He was all praise to see the Christian community’s gesture of love and sharing.
