Civil society takes out demonstration against Terrorism and Violence

Faisalabad: March 9, 2011. (PCP) Peace and Human Development (PHD), Association of Women for Awareness and Motivation (AWAM) and Liaison for Enforcement of Human Rights (LEHR) jointly staged a demonstration in favor of peace, tolerance and human rights and in opposition to intolerance, extremism and terrorism. This demonstration was held at circular road in front of Faisalabad press club on 8th March 2011, and was joined by human rights activists, lawyers, students, political workers and representatives from labour unions. The demonstrators were carrying banners rejecting extremism, terrorism, target killings, suicide attacks, Gander based discrimination and violence, Laws, customs and traditions against women and Killing in the name of religion, sect and honour. At this juncture, the participants of the demonstration strongly criticized the terrorists for car bomb blast in Faisalabad which killed at least 25 and injured over 131 persons. They also condemned the brutal assassination of Mr. Shahbaz Bhatti, Federal Minister for Minorities’ Affairs, who was shot dead by the extremists due to his firm stand for repealing blasphemy laws in Pakistan. The demonstrators shouted slogans against extremist elements and urged government to take stern action against terrorist groups for their involvement in destructive and unlawful activities, and for inciting hatred, intolerance and violence in the society.
