Faisalabad: May 17, 2012. (Suneel Malik) A protest rally “Voice for Workers’ Rights” starting from Press Club and culminating at Clock Tower in Faisalabad, was staged to express solidarity with the formal labourers as well as excluded workers of the informal economy. The rally was held on May 1, 2012 under the aegis of Peace and Human Development (PHD Foundation), AWAM, CARE, POWER and LEHR Network, and was joined by labourers from different sectors, workers’ and students’ leaders as well as social and political activists. The demonstrators carrying placards and banners made commitments for protection of workers’ rights, and urged the government to protect social, economic and legal rights of the workers especially recognition as labourers who are engaged in informal sectors.
During the march, the protesters shouted slogans against extremism, terrorism, target killings, IMF, WB, IFI dictated anti-worker polices of the government, inflation, unemployment, less wages, load-shedding of gas & energy, forced & child labour, feudalism, capitalism, contract system, privatization of government institutions, unemployment, government’s anti-labour laws & economic policies, economic exploitation of female workers.
