Islamabad: May 22, 2012. (PCP) As production, sale and consumption of liquor is prohibited (haram) under the Constitution of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan for the majority population of the country, income from Excise Duty on alcohol is also violation of the tenets of Islam. This was stated by Convener World Minorities Alliance in a press statement issued here Tuesday. He said inclusion of income from the prohibited product in the forthcoming budget would pollute the whole religiously permitted (halal) budgetary outlay with something prohibited (haram) J Salik said a law of the country allows only the minorities to buy and consume alcohol, to procure which they are issued special permits by the government, all income from levy on it should be spent on their welfare. He claimed that the government earns billions of rupees from Excise Duty on liquor, but spends very little on welfare of minorities.
