WASHINGTON DC: August 2, 2012. (PCP) Senior Balochistan journalist and founder of the American Friends of Balochistan has welcomed the appointment of Richard G. Olson as the new US ambassador to Pakistan, but has disputed his stance that Pakistan has given up its strategic depth policy in Afghanistan. In a letter to Olson, Ahmar Mustikhan congratulated him on his nomination as US ambassador to Pakistan and said he was pleased to read his statement before the senate confirmation committee. http://www.foreign.senate.gov/imo/media/doc/Olson_Testimony2.pdf "However, I regret to note that you were quoted as saying that Pakistan military has abandoned its strategic depth policy in Afghanistan," Mustikhan said, adding, "Ground realities do not support this contention." Mustikhan said had this been true, Pakistan would have surrendered the likes of Mullah Omar and Ayman al Zwahiri to NATO and Mumbai terror don Dawood Ebrahim to India. He said, "In fact, Pakistan intelligence services killed key 25 Taliban commanders who were willing to talk peace during the last eight months alone." He said he was convinced that it is high time the US and NATO leaders should directly talk with the Pakistan army chief and the chief of the Inter-Services Intelligence and tell them to wind up the Taliban and other jihadi networks on their soil. Mustikhan said he was sad that Olson did not mention anything about Balochistan, the area wise largest province, which is faced with tsunami of human rights violations by the Pakistan military, intelligence services and the Frontier Corps. Balochistan is also the world capital of enforced disappearances today and is facing a barbaric kill-and-dump policy. He urged Olson the human rights of the Baloch people and the right to self-determination for the people of Balochistan have to be defended if the US goal is to promote democracy, secularism and human rights and defend US interests at the same time. "It is unfortunate that Pakistan is dragging its feet on the opening of the US consulate in Quetta," the AFB founder said. Mustikhan urged the US to fully engage the elected secular and democratic Baloch leadership in any policy the America might draw for the Afpak region.
