Catholic Bishops protest against burning of Christian homes

Lahore: March 9, 2013. (Fr.Inayat Bernd) It was 6th of March afternoon that 39 years old bachelor Sawan Masih, a Catholic was at the barber’s shop to get himself shaved that the discussion took place between Christian and Muslim friends and there was an exchange of words unacceptable by the Muslim friends and they went out and told the people and there was a commotion and the Christians had to flee in next two days to the safest places. The local police of Badamai Bagh police station was well aware about the tense situation and on the 8th March evening the father of Sawan Masih was arrested and put in the police custody until the accused would be handed over to the police. Late at night he was given to the police custody by a local NGO and it was thought the peace will prevail instigated and then they started to attack the houses which were already vacated due to fear and 150 houses were burned to ashes and the local police was unable to stop them as the attackers were well equipped with the weapons. On the 9th night Archbishop Joseph Coutts of Karachi and Bishop Sebastian Francis Shaw OFM of Lahore reached back from the Bishops’ Conference held at Rawalpindi along with the minister of State for National Harmony Akram Masih Gill joined DHARNA ; “the sit in” in front of the Lahore Press Club at 11.30.p.m. and made statements. Bishop Sebastian Francis Shaw OFM, the administrator of the Archdiocese of Lahore said in his prayer that the attack was uncalled for since the accused was already handed over to the police. He demanded from the government to ensure the Christians of Joseph Colony to overcome the atmosphere of fear and uncertainty. He showed his solidarity along with the Archbishop and the parish priest Fr. Inayat Bernard that the people remain peaceful with the affected people. Akram Masih Gill said that the Christians have played a vital role in the creation and establishment of Pakistan and till date none of the Christians have been found in any terrorist activities in the country. He asked the provincial government of Punjab and the Muslim religious leaders to come forward to ensure peace and harmony among the religions. He demanded that the justice be done to the affected families and the condemned this attacked when the accused was already handed over to the police. He said that the misuse of the law should be controlled for a peaceful and harmonious society. He referred to the past events which took place in the province of Punjab in the last five years which included Korian Gojra/Bahmanianwala Kasur, and Sialkot. He said that we can not live in peace until all the factions of society live and let live. In the sideline Fr. Inayat Bernard; the parish priest said that the Muslims and Christians have been living here peacefully before creation of Pakistan and have goo d relationships. Due to the Blasphemy Law people take the law in their own hands. He said that this law is misused many times and over 1,100 Muslims, Ahmeids, Christians and Hindius have become victim from 1986. Fr. Francis Nadeem s OFM said to the C 42 local TV channel in a live telecast in his interview that the justice should be done and the culprits who burnt the houses and their valuable property and things should be arrested and punished to ensure future safety The loss of the Christian houses be compensated and the security should be ensured.
