HRFP condemns the death threats to witnesses of Shahbaz Bhatti case

Pakistan: February 24, 2014. (PCP) Human Rights Focus Pakistan (HRFP) condemns the death threats to eye witnesses of assassinated former federal minister for minorities affairs Mr. Shahbaz Bhatti case as the trial is underway at Anti-Terrorism Court, Islamabad. On 1st February, 2014 one of the witnesses Akmal Bhatti when he entered at his workplace he found two pamphlets and the name was mentioned of two renowned militant groups, the pamphlets were thrown by them. In the pamphlets, life threatening warning was given to him and other witnesses to stop advocating the case of Shahbaz Bhatti. In the pamphlets, derogatory and insulting terms were also written for Shahbaz Bhatti, allies and Non-Muslims. Akmal Bhatti, shared with HRFP that after appearing in the last hearing as prime witness at Anti-Terrorism Court Islamabad where he appeared as single witness and recorded his statement on 22nd January, 2014, he is being threatened by militant groups not to record any further statement and to withdraw his name from the case. Now on 19th February, 2014 Akmal Bhatti, Sikander Bhatti and other witnesses have not appeared in hearing at Anti-Terrorism Court, Islamabad due to death threats to them. The lawyer of Shahbaz Bhatti case submitted an application at the Anti-Terrorism Court, Islamabad and appealed to provide safety to witnesses that they may become able to appear in the next hearing. HRFP urged to Government of Pakistan and higher authorities to take immediate actions for fair trial, justice and against severe threats to witnesses and allies and ensure their safety & security and their families who are involved in this case.
