The decision of giving sanitation department to contractors is major injustice with minorities. J Salik
Lahore: May 16, 2014. (PCP) Convener World Minorities Alliance, Convener Overseas Assembly Pakistan, Former Federal Minister and Nominee for Nobel Peace Prize J Salik lead a massive protest demonstration against Lahore Waste Management Company in front of Lahore Press Club. Protestors chanted slogans against the Punjab government for leaving them at the mercy of those who were treating them in an inhuman way. Protestors blocked the road leading to Simla Pahari. Later, they marched towards Egerton Road at about 2pm and staged a sit-in near Aiwan-i-Iqbal for seven hours continuously.
J Salik addressed on the occasion and said that these sanitary workers clean the city daily, but no one wants to see them in clean clothes. It will only be possible, if they are given regular job. In Lahore Waste Management Company workers have no sort of facility at all but heavy fines are being imposed on their minor mistakes and deduct their salaries instead of facilitating them. He said the contractor firms received Rs12, 000 from LWMC against each worker’s salary, but Rs10,000 each were being paid. He said LWMC did not pay them overtime for working during lunch timing and holidays which was mandatory under the law. He said that the decision to give department of sanitation to contractors is totally wrong and it’s a major injustice with minorities as most of sanitary workers are from minority, it’s a conspiracy to destroy minorities, he said. Contractors are ‘victimizing’ them through various management tactics to make their life miserable, he said.
At last District Officer Surfraz Hussain, Personal Secretary DCO Mian Waheed, GM Operation Khalid Majeed and General Manager HR Shahid came in Sit-in on the behalf of administration, assured sanitary workers to fulfil their demands and Sit-in was ended after negotiations. Protestors said that if our demands will not be fulfilled within fifteen days, we will protest again.
