London: March 7, 2016. (PCP) The women protection bill passed by the Punjab Assembly has been challenged in the Pakistan Federal Sharia Court by Muhammad Aslam Khaki, a Professor of Islamic law. He asked it to declare the bill repugnant to Islam, the Holy Quran and Sunnah. On Feb 24, the Punjab Assembly passed the law that aims to protect women and sure that female victims of abuse receive justice. The Council of Islamic Ideology (CII) has said that Article 6 of the Constitution, which deals with treason, could be applied against the Punjab Assembly for approving a bill without the council’s consent. Maulana Fazlur Rehman the JUI-F chief has strongly opposed at, saying that they reject all such laws and will continue to protect Sharia. Nasir Saeed, Director of CLAAS-UK has condemned the opposition of the bill by Islamists. He said the extremists have shown their real colours. "Verbally they believe in the equal rights of women and now when the time has come prove it, sadly all the Islamists have joined hands together and called the bill unIslamic and controversial to the to the constitution of Pakistan. "It seems to be that covertly the Islamists still consider women inferior and are not willing to give them equal status in society. "We are living in the 21st century and as soon as Pakistani Islamists and as soon as they accept it the better."
