Gojra: May 9, 2016. (PCP)Prominent Civil Society Activist and Human Right Defender Mr. Imran Anjum was threatened on gunpoint by unidentified armed men when he was leaving Gojra city after press conference highlighting issues of bonded labor of brick kiln. Human Right Defender Imran Anjum who also leads one non-Governmental organization PEACH was vesting Brick Kiln factories in jurisdiction of Gojra sub-district along with his co-workers to meet bonded labors and know their situation; after visiting four brick kiln factories press conference was held in Gojra Press Club on May 5, 2016, to invite attention of authorities to solve problems of labor. When Imran Anjum and his team left Press Club and their vehicle was chased on Samundri Road by motor bikers who forcibly stopped them and on gunpoint threaten not to enter in area of Gojra and to visit Brick Kiln factories again unless they will kill him. PEACH Team filed an application with office of Deputy Superintendent of Police Gojra Circle district Toba Tek Singh for registration of First Information Report and protection but up till filing of this story police have not filed FIR; The brick kiln industry in Punjab province of Pakistan is owned and run by influential politician that’s why police protects wrong doing of owners and due labor rights are never protected on such sites. The bonded laborers on brick kiln factories are mostly Christians who are very poor and take loans for their needs from brick kiln factory owners which is never paid as Muslim owners keep it multiplying under compound interest and whole family becomes slave. The government has fixed minimum wages for brick kiln workers but it is never enforced and loans taken by workers for marriage or death are never go paid. Dr. Nazir S Bhatti, President of Pakistan Christian Congress PCC has demanded registration of FIR and arrest of culprits who threatened Human Right Defender Imran Anjum. Nazir Bhatti has also invited International Community to join hands with activists in Pakistan for freedom of bonded labors in Brick Kiln Industry, Carpet Industry and from Feudal Lords Farms who are mostly poor Christians. Imran Anjum is first Pakistani Christian whom Human Right Defender award was offered on his services for poor and oppressed communities.
