Karachi: June 11, 2016. (PCP) A police constable Mohammad Mir Hussain Hydrani injured one 80 years old Hindu named Gokal Dass on not paying due respect to Holy Month of Ramadan of Muslims in city of Ghotki in Sindh province of Pakistan. The crime of senior citizen Gokal Dass was to eat rice in front yard of his home 40 minutes before breaking time “Iftar” of fast of majority Muslim community who was seen by one passing by Muslim police constable who instead of arresting him and taking to police station started beating him in front his family and severely injured him. Gokal Dass who belongs to Hindu community and patient was feeling very hungry and eating his food not aware that Pakistan is changed and not so tolerant as it was during his youth when Hindus, Christians and other members of religious minorities were not prohibited to dine or drink beverages during month of Ramadan before Muslims who were fasting. Before 1980, in Pakistan restaurants remained open with curtains on doors and windows where Muslims who were not fasting and members of minorities’ communities were allowed to take lunch or dinner while in workplaces a separate space was covered to smoke and eat for employees. The strict enforcement of law to ban eating in restaurant and office building in Holy Month of Ramadan came in effect during rule of dictator General Zia-ul-Haq in Pakistan. Only 30% of Muslims keep fasting in Islamic Republic of Pakistan according to one survey when other 70% including Muslim children, sick women and men or travelling Muslims do not fast but law enforce to keep them pretend fasting. It is unfortunate that Gokal Dass was denied registration of case against police constable Mohammad Hydrani when he approached relevant police station but threatened to be arrested on violation of laws to enforcement respect of Holy Month of Ramadan. Sindh province of Pakistan has 11% of Hindu population when it was 22% in 1947 at time of formation of Pakistan. Due to enforced conversion of Hindu women and persecution like incident of Gokal Dass, Hindu community is fleeing to India. The government of Pakistan has removed portraits of Dictator General Zia-ul-Haq from parliament house and other building under special legislation but laws hurting religious harmony and social justice remain in effect.
