Quetta: October 25, 2016. (PCP) A nine years old Christian boy Izhan and his mother Shakil, a nurse in the Civil Hospital Quetta have been released from the Civil Lines Police Station Quetta after interrogation. The victims were accused of burning the Quran on October 20, 2016. When the matter came in the notice of Ms. Asiya Nasir, Member of the National Assembly of Pakistan from Quetta, Mr. William John Barkat,, Member of Provincial Assembly of and Mr. Shahzad Kundan an activist and resident of the area became active to bring the accused and the local Christian community from the sense of horror and terror. There was so much sense of insecurity in the Christians until the matter was resolved. Credit goes to the local leadership of Jamiat Ulema Islam (F) which played a tremendous role because Ms. Asiya Nasir MNA and Mr. William John Barkat MPA belong to the same political party Jamiat Ulema Islam (F). First Information Report number 167 was registered on October 21, 2016 against the unknown persons on the desecration of Quran. Professor Anjum James Paul, Chairman Pakistan Minorities Teachers’ Association has appreciated the role of Muslim and Christian political leaders for taking responsible measures to avoid any conflict between the two communities. He stressed that it is urgently needed to take such kind of prompt action wherever such incidents take place so that there may not be loss to the lives and properties of innocent people. Nasir Saeed, Director CLAAS-UK said this is not the first time that a minor has been charged with a blasphemy offence. He cited several examples like in 1993 slamat Masih, 12, was charged under the blasphemy law, for a crime he never committed. Also in 2011 a Christian girl, F Bhatti, 13 was accused of blasphemy by her Muslim teacher for misspelling. Mr. Saeed said while the Christian boy and his mother remained behind bars, local Christian leader including JUIF’s (Jamait Ulema Islam F) Member of National Assembly Asiya Nasir in collaboration with the Christian MPs Member of Provincial Assembly Baluchistan William Barkat and Shahzad Kundan started jostling for their release. The matter was resolved one day later when the JUI played a pivotal role in retrieving the Christian mother and son.
