Islamabad: December 5, 2016. (PCP) The government of right wing Pakistan Muslim League PML (N) which is taken as conservative Muslim religious party led by Mian Nawaz Sharif took very daring step today to honor first Pakistani Noble Prize winner Dr. Abdus Salam who belonged to Ahmadiyya community.
Dr. Abdus Salam was in Italy when he was honored with Noble Peace Prize in 1979. He was forced to leave Pakistan when constitutionally Ahamdiyya Muslims were declared non-Muslims in Pakistan and targeted by Sunni Muslim mobs.
Dr. Abdus Salam was born in Jhang District of Punjab Province of Pakistan in January 29, 1926, and received higher education from Cambridge University in UK.
Prime Minister of Pakistan Mian Mohammad Nawaz Sharif today approved to send summary to President of Pakistan to name Quaid-e-Azam University of Islamabad National Centre for Physics to be renamed after Dr Abdus Salam.
When he was awarded with Noble Prize he was affiliated with International Centre for Theoretical Physics, Trieste, Italy and Imperial College, London, United Kingdom
Dr. Salam was awarded Noble Prize in Physics for his contributions to the theory of the unified weak and electromagnetic interaction between elementary particles, including, inter alia, the prediction of the weak neutral current.
He was a top level science advisor to the Government of Pakistan from 1960 to 1974, a position from which he played a major and influential role in the development of the country’s science infrastructure.
Dr. Salam was responsible not only for contributing to major developments in theoretical and particle physics, but also for promoting the broadening and deepening of high caliber scientific research in his country.
He was the founding director of the Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (SUPARCO), and responsible for the establishment of the Theoretical Physics Group (TPG) in the Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission (PAEC).
As Science Advisor, Salam played an integral role in Pakistan’s development of the peaceful use of nuclear energy, and may have contributed as well to development of atomic bomb project of Pakistan in 1972; for this, he is viewed as the “scientific father” of this programme.
