Karachi: December 22, 2016. (PCP) Christian Lawyer and Human Rights Activists Ms. Jacqueline Sultan during the meeting with Polio Workers at Essa Nagri, Gulshan-e-Iqbal, Karachi said that Pakistani Polio Workers are marking notable progress in eliminating the polio virus from Pakistan in spite of various attacks since December 2012 where more than 80 polio workers have been killed.
She said some extremists and militants groups propagandize that polio vaccination are made out of pig fat or contain alcohol, and it is reported in media that some parents have refused to get their children vaccinated in KPK and FATA on regions grounds
She said as per media report Pakistan and Afghanistan, are last two polio-endemic countries in the world which is facing militants, who first forcibly stopped vaccination in Swat in 2007 and then in North and South Waziristan agencies in 2012 and thus, leaving at least 160 children crippled and extremists / militants have also attacked police personnel who are guarding to the polio workers.
She said due to operation against militants, more areas have become accessible to vaccination teams, and the government has been showing added interest in tackling the virus.
She said Government should increase security during the polio campaign and wages / salary of polio workers.
