Faisalabad: April 13, 2017. (PCP)The Association of Women for Awareness and Motivation (AWAM) organized a District Seminar titled ‘Judicial Trend Analysis of Pro-Women Laws: Key Findings and Recommendations’ at Unity Hall, Batala Colony Faisalabad. This event was arranged under auspices of Gender Equity Program (GEP) of Aurat Foundation by the support of the American People through United States Agency for International Development (USAID). The event was witnessed by by more than 48 persons belonging to diverse field of life. The prime motives to conduct this activity were to share the judicial trends towards women litigants and socio-cultural impact of the pro-women legislation in Punjab province. The District Seminar was presided over by Begum Khalida Mansoor Member National Assembly (MNA) while Rana Ali Abbas Khan Advocate, President District Bar Association Faisalabad was the guest of honor. The other dignitaries include Mr. Zaman Khan Advocate, Ms. Shazia George, Mian Yasir Nazir Advocate, Syed Mujahid Hussain Gilani Advocate, Syed Sajid Gilani Advocate and Rabia Tabasum Advocate. A Member National Assembly (MNA), Begum Khalida Mansoor said, ‘The government is sincere to protect the rights of women through promulgating new laws and legal reforms which need to be advertised and publicize for educating and sensitizing the communities’. ‘It is obvious, room for the improvement is always exists and government is inviting the suggestions and recommendations from the civil society organizations to make the statutes more effective and comprehensive’, she added. A Member of Punjab Commission on the Status of Women Shazia George said that primitive family attitudes are hindering women to access justice and the gender intolerance further nourishing the culture of inequality and injustice. It inevitable to create training opportunities for judges and police personnel as well as of lawyers to acquaint them pro-women statutes and gender justice for realizing a pro-women society with equal rights and opportunities. The President District Bar Association Faisalabad, Mr. Ali Abbas Khan said, ‘Though the copious legislation is existing for women but the concerned stakeholder is still ignorant about their legal rights and in such circumstances the pro-women laws are unable to deliver the required results’. The DBA Faisalabad is committed to contribute in the protection of women rights through extending pro-bono services to the women survivors of violence, he informed. A Human Rights Defender (HRD) and Law Practitioner, Mr. Zaman Khan said, ‘It is alarming that in the presence of strong legal cover for women, the ratio of honor killing is increasing day by day’. He called upon the government, ‘It is imperative to bestowed sufficient resource in terms of finance and human to improve the functionality of the implementation machinery’. Additional District Public Prosecutor, Mr. Yasir Nazir said, ‘The access of women to justice is still an unfulfilled dream that need to be realized on priority basis to create equal space in the society to play their vital role in the development of the Pakistan’. He highlighted, ‘the less number of women at bar and judiciary is the root cause of inaccessibility of women to justice that need to enhanced’.
