Hyderabad: November 14, 2017. (By Abbas Kassar) SPARC, Society for protection of rights of child and child rights movement arranged a consultation session on implementation of child rights convention of UNO by Pakistan. The consultation was held on eve of submission of review report of child rights situation in Pakistan at UNO Human Rights Commission the session of which was also telecast live from New York to audience at Hyderabad club on Monday. UN member countries including Pakistan are bound to submit review report after every 5 years. Pakistan foreign minister Khwaja Asif was in UNO to overlook submission of report which was presented by federal secretary for foreign affairs. UN watchdog body would check and ascertain review report submitted by Pakisan whether country was implementing its charter on child rights or not ? Main speaker at consultation session was Iqbal Detho noted human rights activist. He told that there were 2 procedures to ascertain review one was through HRC and other on charter based treaties. Pakistan was to submit its review report on 20 pages while other 2 reports would be of UN and of stake holders. Iqbal Detho said government has formed National Commission on Human Rights but deplored that UNO has yet to assent it. He said with sorry that government has not as yet criminalize torture which was common at police lock ups, jails and other places including domestic torture. Enforced disappearance and arrest and detention were also on rise. Then there was case of keeping arrested persons under remand from 90 to 120 days adding that there were also military courts here as such UN commission on HR might raise questions on fair trial and right to appeal. He added violation of minority rights and women rights might be mentioned in review report to be verified by UNO. He said discrimination with women continues in government jobs. He specially mentioned that there was no woman judge in either Supreme Court and nor in any of High Court. Iqbal also mentioned restrictions on freedom of expression adding that committee to protect journalists and other world bodies have described Pakistan as most dangerous country for journalists. Juvenile justice and women police stations remaining dysfunctional were also subject to discussion. Kashir Bajeer of SPARC was another speaker at the session. Mustafa Baloch of SPO,Shakeel Abro Additional deputy commissioner, Sultana Sorath, Zahida Detho, advocate Ali Palh working on missing persons recovery and SSP Hyderabad Pir Muhammad Shah also spoke on the occasion and suggested ways to improve human rights situation.
