AMP hopeful on solution of Okara Military Farm tenant issue

Okara, Pakistan: March 29, 2019. (PCP) Anjuman-e- Muzareen Punjab Secretary General David Rehmat appreciated the efforts of National Commission for Human Rights to solve the long-standing tenant issue at Okara Military Farms. Harassment, cases against tenants under Act of anti-terrorist by district administration Okara.

The NCHR interim report on Okara in 2016 was a brilliant effort to help those who were harassed by district administration Okara.  Tenants were charged anti-terrorist laws for demanding land rights, many were arrested on false police charges atvthe time. Human rights violations were at its peak when NCHR intervened. Mehar Sattar was chained at the High Security Jail Sahiwal.

However, asking tenants to pay “Batai” is equivalent to exceeding its mandate by NCHR,

NCHR must take notices of human rights violations as they have mentioned in this latest report as well. But intervening in a civilian dispute is not the task and mandate of the NCHR.

Tenants in Okara have been working for over 100 years in the land. They are demanding land rights for long time.

We support this demand and ask the PTI government to fulfill the promise of PM Imran Khan for ownership rights of the said land.

The dispute would be amicably solved when all the police cases are withdrawn against Mehr Abdul Sattar, David Rehmat Secretary General (AMP), Ulfat Dildar Finance Secretary AMP, Okara, Younis Iqbal and all other tenant leaders, activists and they are released honourably.

Until the leaders are released and cases withdrawn, the dispute will come forward again and again.

The Batai is not the main issue, the issue is Ownership or Death, Gerah Waway Ohi Khaway, land ownership rights would only be solved when the genuine leadership of the Okara tenant are absolved from all false police cases. You cannot keep leaders in jail and then ask the tenants to give Batai.

This NCHR report represent only one side of the dispute and has to consider the views of the tenants. We condemn and reject this press report. We Demand for land ownership rights.
