Lahore: (PCP) A graceful ceremony was held at the Governor House, Lahore, Punjab in order to commemorate the first anniversary of the historic document on “Human Fraternity for World Peace and Living together” signed by Pope Francis and Ahmad Al-Tayyeb the Grand Imam of Al-Ahzar on February 4, 2019. This ceremony was organized by the National Commission for Interreligious Dialogue and Ecumenism (Catholic Bishops’ Conference Pakistan). His Grace Archbishop Sebastian Francis Shaw, the Chairman of the Commission presided over the ceremony. His Grace Archbishop Christophe Zakhia El-Kassis, Apostolic Nuncio to Pakistan and His Excellency Chaudhry Mohammad Sarwar, the Governor of Punjab province were the chief guests of the ceremony while Maulana Syed Muhammad Abdul Khabir Azad the Khateeb and Imam of Badshahi Mosque, Lahore and Maulana Muhammad Asim Makhdoom, the chairman of Kul Maslik Ulma Board, Lahore were the guests of honor. A large number of Christian and Muslim religious leaders, members of civil society, school principals, faculty members of colleges and universities and a good number of people from different religions and different walks of life participated in this ceremony.
The purpose of this event was the renewal of the commitment and to express solidarity with Pope Francis and Ahmad Al-Tayyeb the Grand Imam of Al-Ahzar for their efforts for the promotion of reconciliation, culture of dialogue, peace, freedom and justice in the world.
The ceremony started with the name of Almighty God. The introductory remarks were given by Rev. Fr. Qaiser Feroz OFM Cap. The lunching ceremony of this historic document was done by His Grace Archbishop Sebastian Francis Shaw, His Grace Archbishop Christophe Zakhia El-Kassis, His Excellency Chaudhry Mohammad Sarwar, the Governor of Punjab province and Rev. Francis Nadeem OFM Cap
His Grace Archbishop Sebastian Francis Shaw said that acceptance is essential for living together in peace and harmony. He expressed his pleasure to see so many people from different religions gathered there to commemorate the first anniversary of this historic document.
His Grace Archbishop Christophe Zakhia El-Kassis, Apostolic Nuncio to Pakistan conveyed the greetings of Pope Francis to all the people present there. He reaffirmed the desire and vision of His Holiness Pope Francis for world peace, harmony and coexistence. He said there is greater need to promote the culture of dialogue as a path for mutual respect, acceptance, harmony, justice, freedom and equality.
His Excellency Chaudhry Mohammad Sarwar, the Governor of Punjab province appreciated the peace initiative of Pope France and Ahmad Al-Tayyeb the Grand Imam of Al-Ahzar for human unity and peace. He also acknowledged the good work of National Commission for Interreligious Dialogue and Ecumenism (Catholic Bishops’ Conference Pakistan) for starving for peace and harmony to make Pakistan a better place. He said peace and harmony cannot be promoted in a society without the promotion of justice. He said that the Government has been doing its best to promote religious harmony and unity in the county.
Maulana Syed Muhammad Abdul Khabir Azad, the Khateeb and Imam of Badshahi Mosque Lahore, Maulana Muhammad Asim Makhdoom, the Chairman of Kul Maslik Ulma Board, Lahore. Maulana Mufti Ashiq Hussain, the Principal of Bait-ul-Qural, Lahore, Rev. James Channan OP also addressed on this occasion as they emphasized on mutual respect, acceptance, dialogue, human rights and justice based on mercy for a prosperous and peaceful society in Pakistan.
A cake cutting ceremony took place as symbol of jubilation for the promotion of dialogue and peace though this historic document on its first anniversary. An Olive tree was also planted in the garden of the Governor House Lahore which is symbol of peace and prosperity in the Holy Bible and Holy Quran.
