HRFP condemn the victimization of minorities and demand justice; the growing incidents are alarming:
Faisalabad: Human Rights Focus Pakistan (HRFP) condemns the threats, hatred against minorities, abductions, forced conversions and forced marriages of minority girls, accusing of blasphemy and victimization due to their religion and beliefs.
HRFP is highly concerned about the victimization of minorities; and the growing incidents that are alarming. HRFP fact findings the cases in routine, keeps in contact through assistance and raising their voice through advocacy, for justice and settlements.
The abductions of minority girls are one of the major victimizations against minorities that has added the most recent case of Muqadas Anwar aged 22 as well. Muqadas, a Christian girl resident of district Faisalabad, was kidnapped on 11 August 2022, by a Muslim coworker Zaheer Ilyas and she never came up in front of the family during court hearing or in a police interrogation, but the abductor claimed that she willingly got married. Muqadas a trained beautician from Government Technical Training Institute of Faisalabad was providing services of beauty treatments. She was abducted when she went to Air Avenue Colony of Faisalabad for the work and did not return home. Ilyas Masih, her brother started searching for her with family, he tried to contact her via phone, but her phone was switched off. Ilyas Masih asked from her workplace and came to know through witnesses that someone has kidnapped her.
In response of Ilyas Masih’s application, police have registered a case against unknown rather than known abductor and has not taken any actions against culprits. Police has stated to family that Muqadas has converted to Islam and got married so they could not do anything further about it.
Human Rights Focus Pakistan (HRFP) fact findings the issue, met with the family, witnesses Afzal Masih and Sharafat Masih and more concerned for their situation, especially from 28 October, when the abductor came to the family and warned them directly.
In a same way another recent case of district Sialkot came to HRFP about murder of Christian man Waris Masih whose neighbor had killed him on 8 October 2022, due to hatred and revenge on religion basis. As a part of plot, Muhammad Abid with his wife Sammra killed Waris Masih when he was on his way to hospital at town Qila Ahmadabad. Shabnam , wife of Waris with her brother-in-law Javed Masih started to find her husband. She found his dead body at Gundowali Road, there Muhammad Abid, his wife Sammra and two unknown persons were seen. Sammra and Abid lied to Shabnam and Javed that two unknown men took Waris to the field and killed him but infact they are involved.
Shabnam, Javed and his brother Pervaiz Masih went to police station and registered FIR. Police has registered case but against unknowns rather than known even after proving through Medico Legal Examination (MLC) and other evidence. Shabnam, Javed and Pervaiz Masih told HRFP team during visiting the HRFP office that police is favoring the culprits during investigations. The family shared further with HRFP that they have visited police station for several times, but the police is making excuses. Pervaiz Masih also shared that to build pressure; police has arrested his son Sharjeel Masih on 12 November 2022.
In another case, most recently two men Shahzad and Astifnus visited HRFP office. Both shared about the threats they are facing for defending their, Christians homes and two Churches as well that the culprits wanted to possess. They further shared with HRFP that their homes and Churches are in their ownerships since 1970s, but from sometime the political and religious authorities wanted to possess them. This issue is on a peak now by the direct interventions of prominent authorities with perpetrators. The case has processed through the courts and HRFP is highly concerned about to raise voice and support.
Naveed Walter president of Human Rights Focus Pakistan (HRFP) said that the matters of abductions, forced conversions & marriages, murders and land grabbing/possessions of the worship places of minorities, are the types of religious persecutions where the religious minorities are victimized being soft targets. HRFP demanding justice for Muqadas Anwar returns to home, for the family of deceased Waris Masih and for ensuring ownership of both Churches and Christian families homes, Naveed Walter added.
