Islamabad/Lahore, 24 June 2024 – In a landmark move, the National Assembly on 23rd June and the Punjab Assembly on 24th June passed resolutions addressing the grave issue of mob lynching and emphasizing the protection of minorities. This significant step marks a pivotal moment in the country's legislative efforts to combat violence and ensure the safety and rights of all citizens, particularly religious minorities.
The resolutions, which received overwhelming support, call for stringent measures to prevent mob lynching and provide a framework for the protection of minorities. This legislative action aims to curb the misuse of blasphemy laws and safeguard innocent lives from unjust persecution.
Nasir Saeed, Director of CLAAS-UK, praised the initiative, stating, "Taking such an initiative is a significant step in the current environment. At least politicians have started discussing this law in parliament, with Christian MPs being particularly supportive. I appreciate their courage and pray for them. CLAAS has been tirelessly working to stop the ongoing misuse of the blasphemy law, and this resolution is a beacon of hope. I hope that this discussion does not stop here but that politicians will strive to find solutions to stop the continuous misuse of the blasphemy law and to save innocent lives."
Law Minister Azam Nazir Tarar, along with other prominent lawmakers, has been instrumental in advancing these resolutions. Their dedication to justice and human rights has been pivotal in garnering support for these critical measures.
The resolutions were championed by various members of parliament, including a notable number of Christian MPs who have been vocal about the need for such protections. Their advocacy and commitment to this cause have been instrumental in bringing this critical issue to the forefront of legislative discussions.
The passing of these resolutions signifies a collective acknowledgment of the urgent need to address mob violence and protect vulnerable communities. It also sets a precedent for future legislative actions aimed at promoting justice and equality in the country.
As these resolutions pave the way for more comprehensive legal reforms, it is hoped that they will lead to tangible changes on the ground, ensuring that the rights of all citizens are respected and upheld. The government and lawmakers are now tasked with the responsibility of implementing these resolutions effectively and working towards a more just and inclusive society.
