Canada: (By ICV) Patrick Brown, Mayor of Brampton, issued an official proclamation on March 11, 2026, declaring a “Day of Remembrance and Action on Religious Freedom” to commemorate the martyrdom of Shahbaz Bhatti, who courageously gave his life defending human rights and promoting interfaith harmony.

In response to the proclamation, Peter Bhatti, Chairman of International Christian Voice and the elder brother of Shahbaz Bhatti, expressed his deep gratitude to Mayor Brown, the members of Brampton City Council, and City staff for their continued commitment to honouring Shahbaz Bhatti’s legacy.

Mr. Bhatti stated, “Your leadership in proclaiming a Day of Remembrance and Action for Religious Freedom in the City of Brampton demonstrates that the values for which my brother gave his life defending human rights, dignity, and religious freedom are deeply respected and upheld in this great city. Through your meaningful actions issuing this proclamation, naming a park in Shahbaz’s honour, and ensuring that his book is available in all Brampton public libraries you have created lasting symbols that will educate and inspire future generations. These gestures are powerful proof that the sacrifice of Shahbaz Bhatti continues to live on in the hearts of those who believe in justice and freedom for all.”

Mr. Bhatti concluded by expressing his appreciation: “Once again, please accept our heartfelt gratitude. I would also like to extend special appreciation to the mayor, the members of Council, your dedicated staff, and especially Yeshwa Younis, who continues to represent and support our community at City Hall.”
