Minority Politics
By : Asif
Dear Mr. Bhatti, I read Mr. Arsalan Khan's letter entitled 'Minority Politics' on your website, and was disappointed to see Mr. Khan's political awareness. He is probably not aware that according to the first Pakistani constitution of 1971; Christians could not only vote in joint electorate, but also had the additional provision of reserved seats in the parliament. Since the president Musharraf has decided to restore joint electorate system in the country, so Christians would naturally want it to be restored according to the 1971 constitution. Moreover if there can be reserved seats for women in the Parliament, though they make 54% of the Pakistani population; then why not reserve seats for Christians who are just over 10%. Mr. Khan has taunted Pakistani Christian for not being able to make up their minds about what kind of political system they want. He needs to understand that it is not Pakistani Christians, who can't make their minds; but it is rather Pakistan's Muslims rulers, who can't make up their minds about these constitutional issues. One military dictator wanted to keep PPP out of power, and he decided to introduce separate electorate; whereas another one wants to keep the Maulvi out of parliament, so he restored the joint electorate. Since both of these rulers had their own vested interests in mind, therefore they tempered with the country's constitution according to their selfish whims and desires. Neither of them had Pakistani Christians or their welfare in mind before taking these steps; therefore Christians continue to suffer constitutional injustices in their own homeland. Let me remind Mr. Khan of a few examples of Pakistani Muslims not being able to make up their minds about some issues of socio-political and economic nature in Pakistan. They haven't been able to make up their mind whether they would like to have an interest free economic system in the country or the western capitalist economic system. They aren't able to make up their minds whether Urdu should be our official language, or shall we continue with the English language of our former colonial masters. They haven't been able to make up their mind that they should go ahead with the Kala-Bagh dam or not. They haven't been able to make up our mind whether to ban the cruel ritual of marrying Muslim girls to the Koran, and the barbaric shame killings in the name of karo-kari in Sindh province, and the list goes on. Fact of the matter is that neither separate electorate were of any use to Pakistani Christians without division of constituencies, nor the joint electorate are going to be of any benefit without the reserved seats. The electorate system is not the problem, but the real issue is the sincerity of the Pakistani Muslim rulers; who previously have mostly been either corrupt or selfish in implementing the constitutional rights given to Christians in Pakistan. I personally believe that either separate or joint electorate; whichever political system is faithfully implemented fully, would eventually help Pakistani Christians. As a matter of fact, it matters very little whether Pakistani Christians make up their minds or not; because no ruler has ever consulted them before taking any action anyway. If people like Arsalan Khan are really interested in the welfare of Pakistan, then they should encourage Pakistani Muslim rulers instead; to make up their minds about granting full constitutional rights to Christians in Pakistan. This would not only be appreciated by the Pakistani Christians, but would also benefit the overall progress and prosperity of our beloved homeland. Asif
