Pakistani Christian leaders: Wolves in sheep’s clothing.

By : Aftab Rana

Greetings to all in the name of Jesus Christ, I am asking this question with great distress that how long should Pakistani Christian community has to tackle the dilemma of wolves in sheep’s clothing within itself. Ever since the creation of Pakistan, Christian community has been lacking true and genuine leadership, leadership that addresses the real problems faced by Christians in Pakistan. With few exceptions, we have had leadership that was working for its own interests. Our Pakistani Christian community has been ruined by a few spiritual and political leaders (who are well connected with the government in power) who have done nothing for their own community, and if they have done anything by chance, they probably have some ulterior motives. These leaders are cancerous for the community. For instance, it was unheard of an Islamic convention in a church compound where Islamic leaders give speeches and sermons. Not to mention, these same leaders are against Christianity. This is such a shameful act on the part of our religious and political leaders who have defiled the house of God, probably to win some favors or establish ties with the government. This brings us back to the same question, how much more do we have to take this stupidity. This is the question that thousands of Pakistani Christians asks themselves every day. Is someone going to do anything about it? Will it ever end? This looks like a long row to hoe but certainly not impossible. In the past few weeks, circumstances have shaped in such a way that concerned Pakistani Christians have initiated dialogue within the community through e-mails. It has stirred a lot anger and distress within the community. The communication has increased to such an extent that it has started to clog up the mailboxes. Mostly, this back and forth communication is nothing but pointing fingers on each others, even using inappropriate language. The issue at hand is the upcoming conference in Toronto that Shahbaz Bhatti has organized. The community is divided and is perplexed whether to support Shahbaz Bhatti and his regime or to oppose it. Most of this communication reflects strong opposition against this conference and Shahbaz Bhatti. The question is that people who are opposing are true well wishers of the community or will they become like one of them. As a neutral person, I strongly encourage and request to all those friends who want to discuss the above mentioned matter, please come forward and have a meeting in person. This not only includes residents of Toronto and Canada, but also Pakistani Christians residing anywhere in the world. There is one thing I would like to stress here, if we succeed in setting up this kind of a meeting, people with different comments and opinions come prepared to prove your point, bring proper evidence/documentation or have it handy for reference. The dialogue will be between Shahbaz Bhatti’s organization in Canada and opponents of Shahbaz Bahtti. If you support the idea then this meeting can be arranged here in Toronto. For people outside of Toronto, conference call can be arranged for their participation. These are simple logistics which can be figured out later, but the most important thing is let’s get together and talk like real human beings and figure out doubts or questions that we have for this leader. Based on facts, let’s decide whether we want to oppose Shahbaz Bhatti or we want to support him. Instead of shooting in the dark, let us communicate, figure out and then act before the conference in May 2009. In the end I want to thank you for your time. We will wait for your suggestions/comments and look forward to meet you. Once again I would like to emphasis that shooting e-mails here and there won’t do any good. Let us take a practical approach and discuss then in person. Sincerely, Aftab Rana
