Anonymous angry Muslim friend on Common sense and superstition

By : Asif

Dear Mr. Bhatti, I have read the letter by our angry but anonymous Muslim friend, who is angry for a number of reasons. He is angry about Saleem's vision of Jesus Christ, calling it a superstition. He is also probably angry about his intention for converting to Christian faith, though he writes that Saleem would be free to do so according to Islam. Then he gives example of someone named Joseph Solomon, and in the end of the letter he accuses Christians for lacking guts. I would like to agree with our anonymous friend about his theory of superstition, but there would be certain theological problems for doing that. I agree with him that such spiritual experiences can't be proved scientifically. Moreover it is not a measurable and observable phenomenon, which scientifically damages the credibility of such claims; and often such spiritual experiences are more a matter of faith than reason. But there is a problem for adopting this approach, because then we have to make up our mind that whether we are going to be selective in brandishing such experiences as superstitions, or are we going to label all such experiences as superstitions, wherever and whenever in history they may have taken place. What about such experiences of all the prophets, including prophet Mohammad; because the contemporary Arabs also accused him for being superstitious and insane. Some examples from the Koran are Sura 7:184, 34:46 (Moh. Is not insane, he is just a Warner), Sura 15:6 (Kafirs say Moh is insane), Sura 17:47 (They listen to the Koran for a laugh, and say that you are follower of a possessed), Sura 23:70 (They say he is insane, though he has brought the truth to them), Sura 25:8 (They say that Muslims follow only a possessed person), Sura 37:35-36 (When kafirs were told, there is no deity other than Allah, they were arrogant. They say that shall we leave our deities for an insane poet), Sura 51:52 (The previous prophets were also called Magician or Insane), Sura 52:29 (Moh neither receives news from jins, nor is insane), Sura 68:1-2 (Verily by the pen, that Moh is not insane), Sura 68:51 (When they listen the Koran, they say, 'You are insane'), Sura 81:22 (Moh is not insane, and he has seen Gabriel at the open edge of heaven) Why should our anonymous friend believe the experience of prophet Mohammad, who claimed to have seen angel Gabriel. If we apply the logic of our anonymous friend to Mohammad, then we may need to ask the question, "How did prophet Mohammad know, if it was angel Gabriel, and not someone else. Had Mohammad met Angel Gabriel before?" Would our anonymous friend tell us, why he has double standards for applying his logic in one case and not the other; and if he applies same logic to prophet Mohammad, then why he is still a Muslim? But I would like to agree with him that this experience by Saleem doesn't necessarily prove Jesus' divinity, His death on the cross etc. But we have enough evidence from Biblical and secular sources, which would prove Jesus' life, death and resurrection. Biblical prophesies about Christ in the Old Testament, the early father's writing, and even the secular historians like Josephus are all testifying to the divinity, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Our anonymous friend can read the detailed version of this evidence by surfing the www.answering-islam.org or www.debate.org.uk websites I have doubts about the knowledge of our anonymous Muslim friend about Islam, from his statement that "However if Saleem wishes to convert to Christianity then according to Islam he should be free to do so". Because according to Islam, Saleem will not be free to become a Christian; because the according to Islam the apostate (Murtad) should die. In the Koran we read, "But if they repent and establish worship and pay the poor-due, then are they your brethren in religion. We detail our revelations for a people who have knowledge. And if they break their pledges after their treaty (hath been made with you) and assail your religion, then fight the heads of disbelief -- Lo! They have no binding oaths in order that they may desist (Sura 9:11,12). There are many incidents recorded in Hadith and Sunna materials, which describe the horrific incidents, where Muslims who left Islam were killed by Mohammad or the early Islamic leaders (khalifs). I would like invite our anonymous Muslim friend for a friendly dialogue about any issue concerning Islam and Christianity, on the pages of PakistanChristianPost website. He accuses Christians for not showing more guts, but I wish he had guts to at least tell us his name instead of staying anonymous. Asif
