Islamabad: March 17, 2007. (Report by Jawad Mazhar of ROD): Members of National Assembly as well as members of all four provincial assemblies has sworn in today.
The inaugural session of national assembly was convened at Islamabad, whereas inaugural sessions of the Provincial assemblies of Punjab, Sindh, Balochistan and North West Frontier Province (NWFP) took place at provincial capitals Lahore, Karachi, Quetta and Peshawar respectively.
Heads of both the leading political parties Asif Ali Zardari (Co-Chairman of PPP) and Mian Nawaz Sharif (PML-N) are not members of the national assembly but they witnessed the proceedings of the inaugural session from the guests' gallery of national assembly conference hall. The proceedings of the house started 45 minutes late than the scheduled 11:00 am.
Proceedings at national assembly, commenced after the recitation from the Muslim Holy Book 'Quraan'. Before the oath taking the house observed one-minute silence to pay respects to assassinated former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto. After praying for the slain Ms Bhutto, 328 members took oath and signed the assembly roll.
Christian members of the national assembly Shahbaz Bhatti, Dr Nelson Azeem and
Akram Masih also took oath.
Christian members of the Punjab assembly Ms Najmi Saleem, Kamran Michael, Joel Amir Sahotra, Khalil Tahir Sindhu, Pervez Rafiq, Tahir Naveed Chaudhary and Joyce Rufin Julius were sworn in at Provincial Capital Lahore.
Inaugural session of the Sindh assembly convened at Karachi and Salim Khursheed Khokhar and Stephen Asif Peter representing Christians of Sindh Province took oath.
In Peshawar, the capital of the NWFP the hotbed of Islamic extremism Christian members Asif Bhatti and Prince Javed were sworn in.
Balochistan provincial assembly session took place at Quetta and the only Christian representative Jaffar George took oath.
