More Churches attacked in Karnataka, India.

BANGALORE: September 21, 2008. Like the proverbial genie uncorked, Bajrang Dal continued to instigate attacks against churches and prayer halls eight days after it began.

Three churches in Bangalore and one more in Madikeri were attacked in the early hours of Sunday creating more panic and insecurity among the Christian community. The Yeddyurappa-led BJP government, which went into damage control following the two advisories sent by Centre on Thursday night and Friday morning, went into a tizzy since morning as reports of the continued attacks against churches in the Karnataka capital started trickling. The St James Church in Mariannanapalya on the ring road near Hebbal, the Church of Holy Name of Jesus near Rajarajeshwarinagar on Mysore Road in Bangalore and a church at Boonahalli near Devanahalli in city outskirts and a church in Madikeri were subjected to attacks either in the night or early Sunday morning. The chief minister, who was scheduled to fly to Tumkur on a previously committed official programme, delayed his departure to attend a high-level meeting with state home minister V S Acharya, chief secretary Sudhakar Rao, DGP Srikumar, home secretary Sunil Kumar and other senior officials to review the situation. Obviously miffed at the continued attacks against churches under his very nose despite holding out tough warnings to all district officials, particularly deputy commissioners and superintendents of police, against recurrence of the incidents and the threats of action against the officers for any untoward incidents under their jurisdiction, Yeddyurappa and Dr Acharya publicly pulled up the jurisdictional officers. ``I personally admit the failure of officials in maintaining vigilance and patrolling in preventing the incidents,’’ the chief minister confessed. Mr Yeddyurappa, who had personally briefed governor Rameshwar Thakur on Saturday evening on the law and order situation hours after similar meetings by the home minister and the law and parliamentary affairs minister Suresh Kumar, was visibly annoyed and perturbed at the attacks against churches and indicated that the home minister and DGP have been directed to punish the jurisdictional police officers in the city for their lapses.
