Zardari says US must inform Pak beforehand about strikes

Islamabad: Nov 14, 2008. Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari has reportedly said that the US must inform his country about carrying out strikes on tribal areas in Pakistan’s territory, or allow Pakistan itself to strike against the terrorists.

The new US administration must allow us to have the capability of doing more. We want to do more. It’’s our war, cbsnews.com quoted him as saying in an exclusive interview. To a question if US must inform Pakistan about the strikes, Zardari said: The US yeah, of course, that would be a welcome step to inform us also. Denying that any like 9/11-like terror attacks on the US were being planned in his country’s tribal areas, he said: Well I can assure the American people that nothing like that is going to happen in my watch. Taking a strong stance against the US strikes, he said no body would be allowed to carry out such strikes on his country’s soil. Anybody who needs to come to Pakistan needs to have a passport and a visa. So whether it’’s ground forces or air forces they need a visa and if they don”t have a visa they’re not allowed, he said in the interview. To a question, that if Pakistan government was losing the people and the strikes were undermining its credibility, why the government allowed them, Zardari said: They do not happen with our knowledge.
