Dear Reverend Dr. Gill: The Prime Minister has forwarded to me your e-mail of October 25, 2002, concerning the security of Christians in Pakistan. Canada is acutely aware of, and remains concerned about, the human rights situation in countries around the world, especially as it affects religious groups. The Government of Canada takes every opportunity to make its views on human rights and religious discrimination known to the authorities of these countries. Support for freedom of religion is an integral part of our ongoing work in promoting human rights. We are aware of current human rights problems in Pakistan, particularly as they affect religious minorities. Our High Commission in Islamabad is monitoring the situation closely, and we will continue to make representations to the Pakistani government on the rights of minorities. We are encouraged by the recent elections in Pakistan in which 10 seats in the National Assembly have been reserved for minorities. Thank you for taking the time to share your concerns Sincerely, Bill Graham
