ISLAMABAD: Pakistan has formally arrested at least five scientists and officials from the country;s top nuclear enrichment facility amid a probe into the alleged transfer of technology to other countries, a government spokesman said on Thursday.

At least five people have been detained for a period of three months, Interior Ministry spokesman Rauf Chaudhry said, adding that they had been detained for interrogation and were formally arrested on Wednesday. They include nuclear scientists and administrators belonging to the Kahuta Research Laboratories (KRL), he said. The detainees included senior KRL scientists Mohammad Farooq and Nazir Ahmed, and administrators Brigadier (r) Tajwar Khan and Brigadier (r) Malik Sajawal, Chaudhry said. Dr Abdul Qadeer Khan;s principal staff officer, Maj (r) Islamul Haq, was also arrested, the spokesman said. He did not say what charges the five faced.
