LUCKNOW: Clashes between Hindu and Muslim residents in a northern Indian town continued for a third day on Sunday, with two more people killed despite a 24-hour curfew, officials said. Authorities clamped the curfew on the town of Mau after clashes erupted on Friday, but sporadic violence continued, said HS Yadav, Mau's top government administrator. Two people died from bullet wounds overnight, bringing the death toll to five, Yadav said. At least 40 people have been injured. Police have arrested at least 89 rioters, Yadav said. On Friday, rioters burned shops and clashed with each other using pistols, knives and other weapons. Mau is about 300 kilometres southeast of Lucknow, the capital of Uttar Pradesh, India's most populous state.
