Minister confirms Non-Muslims allowed to get liquor permits in Pakistan
Lahore. November 23, 2005. Non-Muslims are authorised to get liquor permits under Prohibition (enforcement of hadd) Rules 1979, Minister for Excise and Taxation Dr Muhammad Shafique told the Punjab Assembly on Tuesday.
Replying to a query by Muttahida Majlis-e-Amal's (MMA) Muhammad Waqas, the minister said that the law allowed 11 five star hotels in Punjab to sell liquor to non-Muslims. He said the government had directed the department concerned to issue liquor permits to non-Muslims only. He said the government supplied liquor to five star hotels through various companies and the department was trying to stop the misuse of liquor permits.
Arshad Mehmood Baggu, Rana Sanaullah Khan, Samiullah Khan and Ehsanullah Waqas from the opposition benches asked the government to introduce a law on the sale and purchase of liquor in the light of Islamic teachings.
Replying to a question, the minister said that former chief ministers Mian Nawaz Sharif and Ghulam Haider Wyne issued directives for the appointment of 92 Excise inspectors during 1988-90 and 1990-93.
