ISLAMABAD: November 28. (NNI) Archbishop of Canterbury Dr Rowan Williams has said that all religions in the world preach peace, fraternity and justice and that mutual understanding and tolerance among all religions and their followers in general and Islam and Christianity, in particular, was the need of the hour.
Addressing a press conference here on Monday at a local hotel, he said that in Pakistan, Christians and Muslims are living peacefully and the way they had worked for the quake victims, I am really impressed by their brotherhood.
Bishop Michael Jackson and Bishop of Lahore Alexander John Malik were also present in the press conference.
He expressed his heartfelt sorrow over the earthquake and the destruction caused, and expressed sympathy to the affected, assuring them of the fullest cooperation by and on behalf of the Christian community.
Archbishop of Canterbury Dr. Rowan William has expressed his confidence in the leadership of Pakistan to peruse the agenda of interfaith harmony. He quoted the top leadership of Pakistan that the government of Pakistan was committed to protect minority on priority basis.
He said that the present government was striving hard to achieve peace and justice and enhance the message of brotherhood, love and peace.
About blasphemy laws, he said that Pakistan is a democratic and tolerant country and the blasphemy laws were its internal matter. However, he said that the rights of minority should be protected.
He appreciated the steps taken by Pakistan to safeguard the rights of minorities.
Christians and Muslims should not become hostage to global geopolitical events and work together because both religions have a common history, he said.
He said that September 11 and July 7 had highlighted the importance of inter-faith dialogue and a solid foundation had been laid in Britain after 9/11.
He said that several people were of the view that another incident like 7/7 could have disrupted inter-religious harmony, but nothing of that sort happened.
