Islamic protesters fail to disrupt mixed marathon in Pakistan.

A mixed-sex marathon passed off peacefully in Pakistan yesterday, despite threats of violent disruption from Islamic conservatives. Crowds cheered as hundreds of women and thousands of men ran together through Lahore.

More than 5,000 police stood guard; their presence meant that protesters, who claimed that female participation was obscene, were unable to upset the race. "We`re so relieved it passed peacefully," said the coordinator, Masood Hasan. "You can`t reason with these people." Mixed-sex races are a flashpoint between liberals and religious conservatives.
