Christians condemn the decision to abolish minority seats in Parliament. Government not empowered by Supreme Court to amend constitution. Separate electorate was duly endorsed as part of constitution.<br>By Nazir Bhatti
New York. Jan. 16, 2002. Founder and Chief of Pakistan Christian Congress Mr. Nazir S Bhatti , strongly condemned the decision of government to end the 10 seats in national assembly of pakistan reserved for minorities under separate electorate system
The cabinet decision to allocate 20 seats for technocrats in parliament as reserved seats is undemocratic and military government plans to enter retired military officers through this back door to safeguard their interests in parliament. The increase in women seats from 20 to 60 is also against the spirit of constitution.
Mr. Bhatti, said that decisions to amend the election system and increase in seats and abolish the seats of minorities was suppose to put on the elected representatives and military government was only to hold election in time frame put forward by supreme courts.
The situation of religious tolerance in pakistan have left no option that Muslim voters shall ever cast their votes for minority candidates in coming general elections under joint electorate system. He doubted that any Muslim political party shall issue party ticket to minority candidates in the forthcoming elections and minorities shall never be able to raise their voice in parliament in future.
Mr. Nazir S Bhatti demanded the government to allocate the seats for minorities in parliament according to the constitution and let the elected government to decide on floor the amendments in constitution.
