“Maniac Messiahs” A poem by Dr. Stephen Gill.

Image

Car bombs, mobility,

might and brutality

have become the toys of robots.

They know how and when

to free their unfed tigers

from the cages of depravity

to rape technology,

humanity and stifle democracy.

With knowledge

easy money and weight

they become maniac messiahs

to snuff out the flickers of the inner blaze.

Breathing the stink

of the ferocity for pastime

they still the nightingale of freedoms

uprooting the tree where she sings.

They cannot perceive

welcoming doors.

Shafts of steel

encased in the tomb of the corpses

warble in the smoky bar of their self-glory,

dig ditches for wastes

and agony

with paralyzing fear

to mangle mothers

and wives.

With the pump of gruesomeness

they fill their balloons

continuously evolving

to unexpected heights.

They do not see

opening to the sky

as does a butterfly.

They lead governments

for more road blocks

metal detectors

bomb sniffing dogs

and fresh looks at newcomers.

Their pleasures shape public opinions

to accept unhappily

increased police powers

surveillance cameras

and electronic screening.

Their relentless pursuits

to grab the crown of chaos

swim political pendulums

to promote quick deportation

and wiretapping.

Their brutal feuds

against freedoms and fidelity

compel regimes to extend

detention and easy arrests.

Patrons of carnage

would smuggle plutonium

to hold the world as hostage

to rank the previous sins

as pinpricks.

In the plutonium trade

where more money can be made

thefts are more likely

by these dukes of futility.

Afraid of falling or crawling

they move with crutches.

In the wilderness of their anarchistic gospel

they prepare terror

with the weeds of ignorance

in the shattered pot of conceit.

Citizens of peace

robots cannot be controlled

from the basement of any nation.

Lament from the top of your shelters

because your freedoms

cannot be assured

even by the mightiest armies.
