Washington, DC: May 27, 2017. (PCP) IDC condemns the heinous attack on Egyptian Coptic Christians that occurred today in southern Egypt, leaving at least 26 people killed, many of them children.
Even though no terrorist group has claimed responsibility yet, it is clear that the masked gunmen targeted the victims for their faith, as they opened fire on two buses transporting Christian worshipers to the Monastery of Saint Samuel the Confessor.
This attack is part of a disturbing trend of increased targeting of Egypt's ancient Christian community and the utter failure of President Sisi's government in protecting them.
“IDC stands in solidarity with the Coptic Christians of Egypt in their suffering, and calls on the Egyptian government to protect them from repeated attacks on their faith, and to bring to justice those who have committed acts of terrorism.”, said IDC Executive Director, Philippe Nassif.
