HYDERABAD: August 26, 2017. (By Abbas Kassar) Sindhi Sangat Sindh staged demonstrations in various cities and towns of Sindh, Pakistan against anti-Sindh deadly water reservoir Gorano dam being built in Gorano village of Thar Sindh, Pakistan. Protest demonstrations were held in Hyderabad, Seri, Kathar and Tando Muhammad Khan. If the site of controversial reservoir dam was not changed then it would cause unprecedented devastation in the area and thousands of people, animals, agriculture will be highly affected. Sindhi Sangat Sindh strongly condemns the silence of Sindh government over this issue which was causing the displacement of thousands of people from their ancestral houses. A large number of Sindhi Nari Sangat Sindh (women activists) also participated in demonstration. In Hyderabad, leaders of Sindhi Sangat Sindh and Sindhi Nari Sangat Sindh Ahmed Baloch, Shehmer Qambrani, Zamer Ahmed, Rizwana Memon, Farzana Shah, Hina Sindhi and others led demonstration against anti-Human and anti-Environment poisonous water reservoir named Gorano Dam. Activists raised slogans against anti-Sindh projects, forced constructions of anti-Sindh projects are violation of human rights, and local people have not been taken into confidence while people of Thar including whole Sindh were protesting constantly but Sindh and federal government of Pakistan ignoring indigenous Sindhi people’s protest against controversial Gorano Dam. Addressing to the public and talking to the media persons, leaders of Sindhi Sangat Sindh said the reservoir is being built to dispose of poisonous water taken out of the mining site in Block-II and the locality of the village Gorano was not taken in confidence, it is a serious human rights violation forced construction of projects that are affecting local population of the area and being built without their will. Poor people of Thar were being forcibly displaced from their centuries old homes without compensation in the name of development. Sindh and federal governments are deceiving people of Sindh. The Engro mining company hiring non-locals while thousands of local indigenous Thari people are jobless, the unemployment ratio in Tharparker is very high, this is not a development. Gorano dam is anti-Thar project. Water reservoirs of such nature would only cause ‘unprecedented devastation’ in the vast fertile area of Thar. It is fact that more than 80 percent population of Tharparker is Sindhi Hindu. Pakistan government’s discrimination towards their religious minorities is condemnable. Sindhi Sangat Sindh leaders further said we are protesting for people’s rights and against injustices committing by Sindh government and Engro Company because they are destroying local community and habitat. Gorano Dam will not only affect 12 villages with 50 thousand population, but approximately more than 60 villages will be distraught. Locality of village also has serious concerns about the purity of water that would be consumed by the people in that region. Besides the water supply, the natural habitat as well as the impact on climate, and the agriculture production will be affected due to the construction of the dam.
