Voorhees, NJ: November 11, 2017. (PCP) The American Sikh Council (ASC) congratulates, Ravinder Singh (Bhalla), Manka Kaur (Dhingra) and Satwinder Kaur for their election victories this week. Ravinder Singh (Bhalla) made history in New Jersey, being elected to serve as Mayor of Hoboken and the first Sikh-American to serve as a Mayor in the entire state of New Jersey which has 565 townships. Ravinder Singh, a practicing attorney, has served on the Hoboken City Council for the past 6 years with aplomb despite negative flak from some quarters. While in the North-West State of Washington Manka Kaur (Dhingra) became the first Sikh American to serve on a state legislature in US history. Manka Kaur, a King County prosecutor who supervises a mental health court, was elected to serve as the state senator for Washington’s 45th district. Lastly, Satwinder Kaur of Kent, WA won her election for a seat on the Kent City Council. Satwinder Kaur, is an IT professional and longtime activist who has volunteered for various community organizations such as Kent Cultural Communities Board, Kent International Film Festival, and Kent Historical Society. Not only are these victories great milestones for the Sikh American community and a positive step in furthering the inclusion and acceptance of Sikh Americans in the United States but shows that the people are open minded and do vote based on the values of the incumbent, especially in these trying times. ASC Vice-President Jasbir Kaur stated, “Sikh American candidates have made the community at large extremely proud of their achievements.” ASC Vice President Jasbir Kaur reiterated, “ASC congratulates all three office-bearers for their phenomenal achievements, their dedication to public service and inspiring all future Sikh Americans to reach higher.” Every step in this direction is a good step to make our nation greater, because our strength lies in our diversity and the collective wholesome values which are brought to uplift everyone together.
