IDC Welcomes Lebanese Prime Minister Hariri’s Decision to Revoke His Resignation

Washington, DC: December 7, 2017. (PCP) Earlier yesterday, Lebanese PM Saad Hariri officially withdrew his decision to resign from the government after a consensus deal with rival political parties was reached at a cabinet meeting. Mr. Hariri’s stated that: "All [the government's] political components decide to dissociate themselves from all conflicts, disputes, wars or the internal affairs of brother Arab countries, in order to preserve Lebanon's economic and political relations." “Regional proxy wars threaten the existence of religious minorities across the Middle East,” said IDC Executive Director Philippe Nassif, "and in order to preserve their existence, the world must act to ensure a new wave of instability does not sweep the region." Several weeks ago, Saudi Arabia instigated the crisis in order to pressure PM Hariri to step down in order to assert Saudi regional domination over Iran at Lebanon’s expense. IDC commends PM Hariri’s decision to rescind his resignation and for working to free Lebanon from the affairs of its neighbors and foreign influence. IDC also continues to call for the full implementation of U.N. Security Council Resolution 1701 calling for the disarmament of all armed groups in Lebanon as well as for U.N. Security Council Resolution 1559 which declares support for a free and fair presidential election in Lebanon conducted without foreign interference or influence and, for calling upon all remaining foreign forces to withdraw from Lebanon.
