Founder of Pakistan Muhammad Ali Jinnah's August 11 speech and anti-minority conspiracies. BY Dr. Emanuel Adil Ghouri
Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah was appreciative of the services of minorities, especially Christians, in the Pakistan Movement. Wherever he felt political weakness in the freedom struggle, he approached Christian leaders and always found their attitude positive. This was the reason why he was always concerned about the rights of minorities.
Although he gave his clear stand regarding the rights of minorities in his August 11 speech, he considered his speech incomplete without mentioning minorities at any point. About 33 of his speeches are on record in which he spoke about equal rights for minorities.not only this, but it is a practical historical achievement that is a clear message of equal rights to those who rob the rights of minorities. On August 10, 1947, the inaugural session of the Constituent Assembly was held in Karachi, in which, on the proposal of Liaquat Ali Khan and the support of Khwaja Nazimuddin, the non-Muslim member of the assembly, Jogendra Nath Mandal, was elected as the temporary president and after his speech, the members of the assembly presented their membership certificates and signed the assembly register.
Although this presidency was for one day, it made history for what is called equal rights.
Those who plundered minority rights, ignoring the thoughts and speeches of the Quaid-e-Azam, included in the Constitution through the Objectives Resolution that a non-Muslim cannot serve as the President of Pakistan, the Prime Minister, or any other key position. This is contrary to the thoughts and speeches of the Quaid-e-Azam.
During his historic speech on August 11, 1947, the Father of the Nation, Hazrat Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah, spoke very eloquently about the protection of minorities and democracy in this God-given nation.
In his speech, he said: "In Pakistan, you have the freedom to go to your temples, mosques and places of worship. Whatever religion you follow or whatever your caste and creed, the government of Pakistan has nothing to do with it." Our state is being established without any discrimination. There will be no discrimination between one sect or another. There will be no discrimination of caste or creed. We are starting work under the basic principle that we are citizens of one state and equal citizens. Now we should keep this in mind as a goal and then after some time you will see that Hindu will no longer be Hindu and Muslim will no longer be Muslim but this does not mean that their religions will disappear because believing in religion is a personal belief of every person. I mean political distinction. They will all become one nation.Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah's August 11 speech is a comprehensive plan for the rights of minorities, which anti-minority forces did not allow to become a part of the constitution and the education curriculum. Rather, efforts were started on the same day to hide the contents of this speech from the public..
According to Zameer Niazi, the distortion of this speech was first mentioned by Hamid Jalal in his article ‘When They Tried to Censor Quaid’, which was included in the January 22, 1981 edition of the weekly ‘Viewpoint’ Lahore.
According to Hamid Jalal, ‘This speech of the Quaid became the target of what can be called the first link in the series of press advisories that have been issued by the permanent administration of Pakistan... However, until then this administration was merely a shadow. Several of its leading members tried to prevent parts of the speech from being published in newspapers, including an attempt by Altaf Hussain to distort the Quaid-e-Azam's speech.
Editor of the daily newspaper ‘Dawn’ Altaf Hussain threatened that if the press advice was not withdrawn, he would go to Jinnah. This was revealed by Altaf Hussain in front of a group of journalists in the press gallery in the assembly. Zameer Niazi writes that, "Like the killers of Liaquat Ali Khan, the people who committed the conspiracy to silence the leader are still shrouded in secrecy."
Muhammad Ali Jinnah's August 11 speech is not included in the records of Pakistan Broadcasting Corporation, Radio Pakistan. According to Khalid Shirazi, who was previously associated with Radio Pakistan as the director of records, Muhammad Ali Jinnah's speech of August 11, 1947, was broadcast along with other speeches of the Quaid-e-Azam in the context of 'Irshad Quaid-e-Azam' until 1977. He believes that some of the text of this speech may have been deleted during the reign of General Zia-ul-Haq.
The words in which Quaid-e-Azam had said that Pakistan has now been created and people of other religions will have the status of citizens like Muslims and can live here according to their respective religions had been cut out. How surprising that in the country created by Quaid-e-Azam, the book containing Quaid-e-Azam's speeches has been out of print since 1980, while this book is available in other countries of the world. It is necessary that Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah's complete speech of August 11 be brought to light and the rights of minorities be determined accordingly..
Pakistani Member of Parliament Munchohar Bhandara submitted a resolution in the National Assembly of Pakistan in February 2007, which recommended that this speech by Muhammad Ali Jinnah be made a regular part of the constitution. National Assembly Speaker Chaudhry Amir Hussain referred the draft resolution to the relevant committee. According to Bhandara, “The government of Pakistan has been in complete violation of this address since 1949. Several parts of this address have been deliberately deleted or changed in the past.” That “on the one hand, the state expresses great devotion to Muhammad Ali Jinnah, while on the other hand, many elements within the state are sacrificing political ideologies for religious ideologies. 18 years have passed since this resolution was submitted to the relevant committee and has not been implemented, is a clear sign of parliamentary malice.”
